The Rona Barrett Foundation was founded by entertainment journalist Rona Barrett to provide aid and advocacy for the elderly population.
“Miss Rona” was inspired to create the Foundation after caring for her own father as he aged. Today’s seniors and caregivers are faced with increasingly tough decisions and challenges that effect their safety, well-being and dignity. The Foundation is committed to being an advocate for these seniors to ensure they can phase into a new stage of life in comfort.
The Rona Barrett Foundation is committed to providing affordable housing for seniors in need: The Golden Inn and Village, a model for community based Affordable housing for seniors in need.
Where Will They Live Tomorrow?
There are approximately 70 million seniors in this country today including Baby Boomers who have just turned 65. In the next 20 years that figure will increase to more than 90 million.
Moving to Action
Today the Rona Barrett Foundation is in the process of building a pilot facility as a model solution to the growing crisis in affordable housing and care of seniors in need. Especially “orphaned seniors” – those with no one left in life to care for their well-being and their dignity.
Learning By Necessity
“I learned a lesson in the best way about caring for our seniors ; I had to care for my own fabulous father as he aged—a man whose dignity I would not let diminish under any condition, despite his years and failing health. I was suddenly confronted by choices and obstacles I never knew existed; health insurance, prescriptions, pills for this, doctors for that, in-home health, adult day care, surgery options, end of life decision making, hospice care, etc. It occurred to me that if I, with all of my resources, was struggling with my state of affairs, that there must be millions of families across the country that were faced with even more difficult circumstances as they tried to care for their elderly loved ones. It also dawned on me that, as we are all living longer and the largest growing population is baby boomers, this was a disaster in the making for our Country.
One ugly truth that is little discussed is that with all of the miracles that come with our modern medicine which prolongs our lives, we are ill-equipped to deal with the repercussions of a growing elderly population. We can “prop them up” to live longer, but not necessarily better. I really feel that, in my generation, while our elderly loved ones died at an earlier age, they died with more personal care and dignity. A longer life and good care should not be mutually exclusive. We need to embrace the fact that we live longer but make sure that we provide the quality of life that all of us deserve that comes with it.”
It Takes A Village
The Golden Inn and Village is the next step for the Rona Barrett Foundation and its mission to provide affordable housing for seniors. In development on California’s Central Coast, The Golden Inn will serve as a model for other communities across the country.
“Together, we can make it possible for seniors to redefine this phase of their lives, and reinvent themselves so that they may remain contributing members of society.”
The Golden Inn and Village is designed as an Inn-like residence for mobile seniors, along with a special Memory Care Center and Assisted Living units. The Village will also have an Adult Day Care Center with extended hours for those who wish to live at home, but to give their caregiver more respite time. With a Community Center, staff housing and Children’s Day Care Center, services are designed to ensure that both seniors and families are able to stay engaged in the community while receiving necessary care.
The Golden Inn and Village will be developed in collaboration with the Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara and nonprofit Surf Development Company.
A Voice for Seniors in Need
“As importantly, I believe, is my opportunity to use my “voice” as a recognizable public figure to advocate and speak on behalf of senior issues. I’ve done this through events I’ve been asked to host and through my one woman show, offered as a joint fundraiser with like-minded nonprofits. I have also invited the national news media back into my life in a new and meaningful way; as an advocate on behalf of our elderly. I strongly hope that my personal involvement provides opportunities for recognition and awareness for critical programs, issues and policy at a national level and in the communities where our seniors are served.
I think that I have landed on a way to make my journey to provide the best care possible for our seniors the most beneficial. …and keep thinking the good thoughts!”
Stay tuned and, as always, thank you for your support.
