The Year of the Woman: 2010
The Oscars are over and many times what happens at here portends what will happen in the future.
Many times since the 60’s we have seen women make incredible strides since the Women’s Movement began, but nothing ever happens overnight. Many mistakes were made in the early days of the Women’s Movement, but last night, the Oscars belonged to the women!
Director Kathryn Bigelow’s Best Director win for “The Hurt Locker” proved once and for all the glass ceiling can be cracked and was.
When I was doing my “thing” during my active days in Hollywood, I would always talk about women’s roles – especially as some actresses aged – that unless you were willing to be a character actress it was hard for a woman over 40 to ever have a good role written for her or were the film studios really interested in moving women along the pathway to equality like the men in film or the heads of corporations.
All the actresses nominated this year played roles in films that were strongly dominated by women who showed their strength and their overwhelming belief that they could accomplish and survive the worst of times and the best of times.
So women have now proven that they can reach the top of the entertainment industry in achieving a range of interesting characters at all ages, as well as directing and making the best movie of the year. Let’s hope it’s not an enigma but a real sea of change.
The next paradigm shift for women will be in politics when there is a woman who will run this country. We’re getting closer and closer to that reality—but that’s a blog for another day!
On this day, I’m content to celebrate the achievements of the amazing women at the Oscars; To Bigelow, Bullock, Mirren, Sidibie, and Meryl Streep, “You done good, girls! Bravo! And kiss Oscar for me.”
