‘Miss Rona’ returns to Hollywood
By Greg Braxton
Before Hollywood was invaded by Perez Hilton, TMZ, “Access Hollywood” and “Entertainment Tonight,” there was “Miss Rona.”
Rona Barrett was one of the first celebrity journalists, pioneering the concept of the in-depth, one-on-one interview, inviting stars to share intimate and sometimes sensitive details about their lives.
Barrett talked to Cher in her bedroom about her romance and marriage to Sonny Bono. Richard Pryor revealed how much he loved cocaine, just months before he was seriously injured in a drug-related accident. The Beatles, Robin Williams, Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford and Richard Dreyfuss all talked to “Miss Rona.”
She retired in 1991 and moved to Santa Ynez, devoting her energy to her family and to her charitable Rona Barrett Foundation, which assists seniors. But she returned to the Paley Center for Media for a one-woman show that recalls her whirlwind Hollywood career.
