“Miss Rona” Honored
Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters honored broadcast celebrity journalist Rona Barrett at its Nov. 19 luncheon. She was recognized for her being the first woman to bring entertainment news to television and praised for her reporting accuracy and show biz scoops. She opened the doors for others and worked hard as a journalist to move beyond the gossip reporting of Hedda Hopper, Louella Parsons, Sheila Graham, and others. She “got off the stage” several years ago, she said, to move to Santa Ynez. She does a one-woman show, “Nothing But The Truth,” and proceeds go to the Rona Barrett Foundation, established to aid and support senior citizens in need.
Also recognized: Peggy Webber, whose California Artists Radio Theatre (CART) has aired for more than 20 years on local radio and now airs on Sirius XM. She often produces, directs, writes and composes music for the episodes. She’s also a veteran actress who, at age 24, was playing Jack Webb’s mother on TV’s “Dragnet.” More information: www.cartaudio.org.
